How to Prepare Your Lawn for Fall in Niagara Region (2025 Guide)

As summer winds down in the Niagara Region, your lawn is preparing for a critical transition. Fall is not the time to forget about your grass — in fact, it’s one of the most important seasons for setting up a lush, healthy lawn next spring. Whether you’re in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland, or Grimsby, this fall lawn care guide will walk you through the essential steps to strengthen your turf before winter hits.

1. Test Your Soil Before Feeding It
Before applying any fertilizer, do a basic soil test to check pH levels and nutrient content. Depending on the area, Niagara’s soils can be on the clayey side, which impacts drainage and nutrient retention. You can buy a DIY test kit at a local garden center or have a local lawn care company like Ron's Lawns do this for you. Based on your area and/or soil test results, you can determine what fertilizer and additional services are required, like core aeration.
Apply a Fall Fertilizer (Timing Matters)
Fall fertilizing gives your grass the nutrients it needs to repair summer damage and prepare for winter dormancy. The best time to fertilize in Niagara is mid to late September when the weather cools but the ground is still warm. A good quality fertilizer will have nitrogen and potassium which helps strengthen roots and increase disease resistance over the winter months.
3. Overseed Thin or Bare Areas
Fall is an ideal time to overseed in Niagara — cool nights and warm soil create perfect germination conditions. Whether you are overseeding your lawn or getting a local lawn care company to do this for you, we recommend keeping the soil moist for 2-3 weeks while seeds establish.
4. Core Aeration = Healthier Roots
If your lawn feels spongy or has water pooling after rain, it may be compacted. Niagara’s heavy clay soils are prone to this. Core aeration helps loosen soil, improves drainage, and allows nutrients to penetrate. We generally recommend aerating your lawn in early to mid-fall (September to early October).
5. Keep Leaves Off the Lawn
Yes, fall colours are beautiful — but those leaves can smother your grass if left too long. We recommend raking regularly, especially after a heavy wind and not letting wet leaves sit as this can lead to fungal growth.
6. Adjust Your Watering Schedule
In Niagara, fall rain is common — but don’t assume your lawn is getting enough water.
Tips:
Keep watering until the ground freezes (usually late October or early November)
Water deeply but less often — 1" per week is ideal
Water in the early morning to avoid fungal issues
7. Keep Mowing — but Adjust the Height
Even as growth slows, your lawn still needs cutting. Letting it get too long before winter can invite snow mold.
Tips for your final mow of the year:
Cut to about 2.5–3 inches high
Never remove more than 1/3 of the blade at a time
Clean your mower blades and store them properly
